Music theory
teaching

I have been teaching music theory in Vancouver since 1995 and am a member of the BC Registered Music Teachers' Association. I have put students through all of the Royal Conservatory of Music exams, from Preliminary Rudiments to Grade 5 Analysis. For many years I taught at Tom Lee Music Academy, and now I teach at my home in the 'Lower East Side' of Point Grey, near Jericho Beach.

I also teach online using Skype and Finale Notepad. Skype software is free and Finale Notepad costs about $10.

As a teacher I try to bring this potentially dry subject to life by getting off the page as much as possible and having the students play everything they study and create on the piano. I believe aural awareness is a crucial part of the study of theory and I work hard to develop this through such ear-training drills as sight-singing, dictation and duet-singing.

I have written my own harmony and counterpoint textbooks. There are three harmony books and one counterpoint book. These books are suitable for use with students taking any conservatory theory exams. I have been successfully using these materials with my students for ten years. You can view a sample of my work by clicking the link below:

Introduction to Harmony. This is the first chapter of my first harmony text.
